Inducted 2009

John A. Van Fleet

John A. Van Fleet, Sr.'s induction into the 2009 IADA Hall of Fame is perphaps one of the most deserved recognitions for an individual dedicated to innovation and to professionalism within the state of Illinois, perphaps even at the national level. One Colleague eloquently shared that "John continues to seek knowledge, apply its most valued concepts and then strives to improve its outcome to ensure that athletic administrators are better prepared to perform their duties within their schools." His determination to be a positive mentor to all athletic administrators is nationally recognized in John's editing and re-writing of the Mentor-Mentee Program Handbook lauded by the NIAAA and utilized by many in our field. His dedication to fellowship and scholarship are further evidenced by his countless presentations, workshops, and 49 LTC classes taught at various levels throughout the country. Even with his impact on the state and national level, John Van Fleet's influence as an athletic director speaks to his belief that athletics bring out the best in people. His guidance and initiative to help the Woodstock community raised in excess of $100,000 necessary to pay for a new press box and scoreboard to replace the vintage mid-1960 board still used early in the millennium. Shortly thereafter, John's assistance in the planning and preparation for a referendum responsible for Woodstock North High School. A fellow administrator stated, "He is one of the most influential Leadership Training state coordinators in the nation if not the most influential state coordinator." John Van Fleet's steadfast dedication to his community and his colleagues has garnered him much praise and recognition from his peers but the honor of induction to the Illinois Athletic Directors Hall of Fame is the culmination of his efforts to be the best athletic director he could be.
