8/21/2008NIAAA Update

NIAAA has settled in very well in its new home at 9100 Keystone Crossing. This past year was a very successful one and this upcoming year appears to be just as exciting. I would like to give you a brief recap on the past year and some insight on what is ahead for our national organization.

First and foremost is our financial situation. We are very solid at this time and areas of revenue have been increasing. Certification was up 6%, Membership was up 9%, Leadership Training up 18% and Product Sales was up 31%. This was a total increase in revenue of 14% compared to the year before.

As you all know membership is the key to any strong organization. The dual membership that has been adopted by some states has shown a sharp rise in our national membership the last few years. We are nearing the 8000 member mark. Section IV has always been a strong membership contingent of the NIAAA. Illinois was at 211 national members its largest since 1998.

The new member data base should be up and running sometime this fall Each state will get a password, this will allow members to update their contact information and view all LTP classes they have taken. This will also allow states mass communication to their members in regards to LTP classes, conference info, etc.
NIAAA Conference will be in San Diego this year from December 13th to the 17th. Lets send a strong contingent from Illinois to this Conference. Online registration is now available simply go to www.niaaa.org and hotel reservations are made directly by calling the Marriott Hotel.

**Attention all attendees to SAN DIEGO CONFERENCE
Please bring a shirt, hat or any memorabilia item from your school to the SECTION IV meeting at the conference. All monies sold from tickets at this meeting go directly to our ENDOWMENT FUND. This fund supports such projects as Hurricane Katrina victims, our OUTREACH Program and many other worthy NIAAA projects. Section IV currently is the only section that holds this type of raffle at the conference. Last year our section gave $600 to the fund

NIAAA will be splitting the proceeds of the conference with the NFHS this year. Last year 1500 LTP classes were taken at the conference
The NIAAA is looking for more people to become involved on their national committees, if you have an interest you can fill out a form on their website www.niaaa.org and mail it in. Illinois was one of the founding fathers of this organization, lets see more Illinois people involved at the national level. It is a professional experience you will never regret.

This upcoming year will be aproductive one for the NIAAA in regards to planning its third STRATEGIC PLAN. This is one of boards goals to implement this plan.
Other goals include:
a. Increase membership
b. Develop and secure new revenue sources
c. Maximize utilization of the endowment fund
d. Established a written policy for the Endowment fund
e. Update NIAAA Policy Manual
f. Update Committee evaluation process

Sincerely
Doug Smith
